Description: Photograph from the Columbus Free Press Collection showing visitors outside of the Dairy Products Building at the 1985 Ohio State Fair. A banner advertises the Butter Cow sculpture inside, as well as available dairy products including milk, ice cream, cheese and milkshakes. The "butter cow" has been a tradition sponsored by the Ohio State University and Dairy Processors of Ohio at the State Fair since the early 1900s. The Columbus Free Press began as a bi-weekly publication in Columbus, Ohio, in 1970. An underground newspaper, it replaced the Ohio State University publication The People, Yes. The earliest known issue of the newspaper appeared on January 4, 1971. The newspaper underwent a series of name changes over the decades, with titles including the Columbus Free Press & Cowtown Times (1972-1976), the Columbus Freepress (1976-1992) and The Free Press (1992-1995). The paper, which covered many liberal and progressive causes, was an alternative to mainstream news sources in central Ohio with the slogan “The Other Side of the News.” In 1995, the paper ceased publication briefly before reemerging as a website in early 1996, and returning as a print publication under the Free Press title in the form of a quarterly journal in 1998. Published under various frequencies during the first part of the 21st century, the Free Press again became a nonprofit monthly publication in 2017 with both a print and web presence, published by the Columbus Institute for Contemporary Journalism and operated by a volunteer staff and board. This sculpture, credited to artist Dan Ross, shows a veterinarian standing with a cow and calf. Description: A farm scene in Medina County. Two prominent farms, the Heritage Farm and the Elm Farm, are located in Medina County. The Heritage Farm is a mid 19th century farm in the Ohio Western Reserve area of Ohio. It consists of a house, privy, carriage house, corn crib, granary, equipment shed, barn, milk house and chicken house. Elm farm was purchased by a master plumber, Henry Abell, in 1927. When no plumbing work was available in 1934, he developed the dairy farm, eventually growing it to 500 acres. Now it is the American Ice Cream and Dairy Museum. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Mule-drawn cart for the Hartsook dairy, which according to an accompanying caption furnished milk for most families in the Clintonville neighborhood of Columbus. This image was included in a "Memory Book" compiled by Mrs. H. V. Cottrell, historian for the Clinton League (sometimes called the Clinton Welfare League) from 1938-1943. The book shows the development of the Clintonville neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio, and records the history of the League. The Clinton League was a women's group founded in 1912 to promote child welfare and later general welfare in Columbus, but which was based in and primarily focused on the area of Clintonville. Description: This photograph of Liederkranz cheese at a factory in Van Wert, Ohio was taken in the 1960s. Liederkranz cheese was invented by Emil Frey of Monroe, New York in the 1882, while he was trying to make Limburger cheese. Frey was a member of a Liederkranz Club, a German singing society, and named the cheese after it. He started the Monroe Cheese Company, which moved to Van Wert, Ohio in 1926 and was sold to Borden Company in 1929. Borden sold the factory to Fisher Cheese Company in 1981, but it too stopped producing Liederkranz cheese after a contamination problem in 1985. Liederkranz cheese is made from cow's milk. It has a yellow crust that is edible and a soft white inside. The photograph is 8" x 10" (20.32 x 25.4 cm). View on Ohio Memory.
